He returned to the first team squad in October, yet across the last 15 matches in all competitions he has been named on the bench 13 times and played only once, coming on briefly late against Newcastle on Boxing Day.

For a player who arrived as Erik ten Hag’s first signing for a fee of 17 million euros, the past year has been deeply frustrating. A loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last season brought limited minutes, and despite the team winning the title, he was sent back to Manchester without a permanent move. Interest resurfaced in January from clubs across southern Europe, but concrete offers have yet to materialize. After missing 517 days due to two serious knee injuries, he has since proven his fitness. Earlier this month, he featured for United’s under 21 side against Wolves, scoring in a 4–1 win. Eighteen year old Diego Leon is highly rated, and United continue to scout young left backs, even though a recent attempt to sign teenage defender Isa Alao fell through in favor of Chelsea.
